Tetris Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a prominent prize-giving event approaches, one notices a demand to include additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
