Meteorological Balloons Used to Smuggle Cigarettes Closed Airport in Lithuania
Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
