From Acclaim to Rage: Right-wing Reaction to Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.
Right-leaning reactions to the partial release of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the previous administration highlighting the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while others lamented how extensive censorship portray former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Administration Defends Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Administration representatives defended the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this transparent with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo outlining the redaction procedure.
Questions Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's name and likeness appear in portions of the materials, the widespread black blocks raise serious concerns about what may be concealed beneath them. Some Republicans immediately called for greater openness.
“The public are furious and walking away,” posted Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the law, and implied that a future Congress may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this file dump grossly fails to comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Figures Rally In Support of the Release
But, a segment of conservative commentators and former President loyalists came out strongly in support of the administration.
The release—from a DOJ run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are entirely redacted, and many of the men shown in pictures have their faces blacked out.
But a few do not, featuring high-profile figures like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, in particular, enabled some conservative figures to launch the offensive.
“It’s pretty ironic how the political left wrongly claimed President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“New documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he was aware of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The administration has not been concealing these documents for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from what they will try and hide forever. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photos as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement added.
Broader Rightwing Comment Remains Subdued
However, broader comment on the right was relatively muted following the release, particularly when compared with the vociferous calls for action that preceded the legislative approval to pass a bill requiring the documents' publication.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest advocates for a full release. In February, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative influencers were given hard-copy folders of files that contained little previously unseen information.
