Department of Justice Intervenes in Lawsuit to Halt California's New Electoral Map
Federal authorities has officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to federal court, targets the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in violation of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Broader Implications
The legal battle constitutes the major response by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its agenda or face resistance, congressional probes and possible further challenges.
